Water and Sewer Treatment

SAFE AND RELIABLE WATER SERVICES

Water Treatment Plant

The City of Mount Holly Water Treatment Facility was built in 1983 and is designed to treat up to 6 million gallons per day, drawing its water from Mountain Island Lake. Water is treated through coagulation, sedimentation, and filtration and then disinfected using chlorine.

The City owns and maintains four elevated storage tanks and one ground storage tank to send out roughly 2.4 million gallons per day of treated water throughout Mount Holly. The treatment facility is staffed 24/7 by certified operators and runs a professional lab for testing and analyzing water.

The Water Treatment Plant is responsible for ensuring that safe and reliable water services are always provided. The plant relies on Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) equipment to monitor and operate the water system. Many security practices are incorporated into the operation, and we have an extensive backflow program in place.

The City's Water Treatment Plant received the Area Wide Optimization Program Award given by NCDWR for meeting standards above and beyond those required by state regulations in 2008, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017, and 2018.

Wastewater Treatment Plant

Each year, the City of Mount Holly performs over 37,000 measurements and chemical analyses to comply with permit requirements, treat your wastewater, and safely return it to the environment. The City's staff of highly-trained and certified operators is committed to the goal of providing the City's wastewater customers with efficient and cost-effective wastewater disposal. We continue to improve our collection and treatment processes to protect you and the environment from the potential harm of inadequately-treated wastewater.

The City's Wastewater Treatment Plant received the 2013 and 2015 SHARP Public Sector Award given by the North Carolina Department of Labor.

Annual Sewer and Collection System Report

The North Carolina Clean Water Act of 1999 requires the City of Mount Holly to provide an annual report to its customers and to the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources (NCDENR) to summarize the sewage treatment works and collection system's performance over the last year.
